Uncle Boydie's Journey - London, Belgium, Israel, Germany

On Monday 23 October 2017, Uncle Boydie departed Melbourne on his way to London; then Belgium to visit the grave of his uncle; then Israel to lay a wreath on behalf of Indigenous diggers; and then on to Germany to present the letter of his grandfather to the German government. TO SUPPORT THE PROJECT and to make the journey possible, events took place in Australia in mid to late 2017, That Allowed tHE LEGACY AND DEDICATION OF WILLIAM COOPER to Have THE CONCLUSION IT DESERVES, and allowed Uncle Boydie to Complete the 'unfinished business' that his grandfather started so many years earlier.

POST JOURNEY EVENT: Hosted by the Council of Christians and Jews (Dec 2017)

The Council of Christians and Jews (CCJ) Victoria presented an afternoon dedicated to the legacy of William Cooper, following Uncle Boydie's visit to London, Ypres, Beersheba and Berlin, honouring his grandfather, William Cooper.

The event featured:

* Avraham Shwarz who accompanied the visit and spoke about the trip and what it means to him and to Uncle Boydie

* Michael Pearce SC, the Hon. Consul-General of Germany, who spoke on behalf of the German Government

* Tim Watts MP who spoke about changing the name of the electorate of Gellibrand to Cooper

Panel on 'The Aboriginal Moses' (August 2017)

Jewish, Indigenous and Interfaith communities came together for an educational evening about the life and legacy of William Cooper. The panel includedProfessor Andrew Markus, Pratt Foundation Chair of Jewish Civilisation, Monash University, and co-author "Thinking Black: William Cooper and the Australian Aborigines' League", 2004; Matt Busby-Andrews, Associate Fellow at the Centre for Public Christianity (Sydney); Dr Beth Rankin, Lecturer in Creative Arts, Australian Catholic University; Rabbi Daniel Rabin, Chief Minister, North Eastern Jewish Centre; Uncle Boydie, William Cooper's 88-year-old grandson; and Moderator Abe Schwarz, Convenor, William Coopers Legacy project. 

Concert to honour William Cooper and Nicholas Winton (August 2017)

An afternoon of storytelling at the William Cooper Justice Centre (Sept 2017)

An afternoon of networking, storytelling and untold-history at the William Cooper Justice Centre, home to VCAT and various courthouses and tribunals, honouring the life of William Cooper, the brave fighter who stood up for injustices near and far, whose name lives on in this modern building.

The panel featured: Uncle Boydie, William Cooper’s grandson; Michael Pearce SC, Honorary Consul General of Germany in Melbourne, and a member of the Victorian Bar; and The Hon Justice Mordy Bromberg, Judge, Federal Court of Australia.

Event in SYDNEY at Australian Hall (Sept 2017)

For the first time ever in Sydney, at Australian Hall, the very place where the 1938 Day of Mourning ("Australia Day") occurred, the heroism and activism of William Cooper was honoured.

The event included a round-table of speakers from groups who support William Cooper, including members of:

  • The Cooper family
  • The Indigenous community
  • The Jewish community
  • The Christian community
  • The Labor movement

The 2017 committee for this project comprised of Uncle Boydie Turner, Abe Schwarz (chair) and Alex Kats, Vivienne Fink, Eva Sommers and Renata Schnall
